In real terms, this puts people at risk. Like when they can\u2019t access potentially life-saving information about their health care or well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The stark truth is that those most disadvantaged or excluded by language include people at risk of poverty, women and girls, people with disabilities, older adults, and minorities. <b>Globally,<\/b><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240080379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <b>four and a half billion people<\/b><\/a><b> were not fully covered by essential health services in 2021<\/b>, and<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2309739_E_SDG_2023_infographics-3-3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <b>25 million children<\/b><\/a><b> missed out on important immunizations<\/b>. The rights are translated into over 500 languages, including Rohingya, for example. Our research shows their needs often remain unmet due to inadequate resources and staff to support communication.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language challenges, cultural differences, and lower levels of health literacy among the Rohingya community can cause confusion, stress, and frustration for patients. These barriers present even more serious challenges and dangers when doctors can\u2019t understand their patients, patients don\u2019t understand medicine dosage instructions, and people who speak sign language go without an interpreter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>By supporting inclusive language solutions, we can help shift power structures. Why? So that people who already faced trauma and humanitarian crises can feel confident and respected in seeking health care. Inequalities persist worldwide, and exclusion disproportionately impacts the health and well-being of marginalized populations worldwide. <b>People need accurate information via communications channels they trust:\u00a0<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disinformation and misinformation worsen disease outbreaks and threaten<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clearglobal.org\/4bc-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> public health.<\/span><\/a><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language barriers can be a major cause of disinformation. Comprehension of health information decreases by 78% when it is not available in someone\u2019s native language.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pandemic began,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/379\/bmj-2022-070331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dangerous misinformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including false cures spread quickly through refugee camps across the world, increasing mistrust and preventing many from getting professional treatment.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajtmh.org\/view\/journals\/tpmd\/103\/4\/article-p1621.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misinformation and disinformation spread in 25 different languages across at least 87 countries, including the United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to violence, deaths, and injuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Bangladesh, Rohingya people<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/news-feature\/2020\/06\/25\/Bangladesh-Rohingya-language-barriers-translation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported negative and neutral experiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/news\/2020\/06\/11\/coronavirus-humanitarian-aid-response#Asia-Pacific\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made fewer visits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to health centers. A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/2020\/03\/10\/rohingya-refugees-internet-ban-bangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mobile ban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/opinion\/first-person\/2020\/03\/24\/coronavirus-rohingya-refugees-internet-ban-misinformation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> information shortage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made it difficult for aid workers to spread safe advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">In Nigeria,<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/379\/bmj-2022-070331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> people refused the COVID-19 vaccine<\/a> because of frightening rumors.<\/li><\/ul><p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><b>When we focus on language inclusion, we can make sustainable development a reality.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We can empower people to know and uphold their rights, and help everyone stay safe, heard, and well.
