As a result, Marma speakers are at a disadvantage at school, getting lower grades and dropping out more than the national average. A 2024 study sought to understand why, by digging deeper into the challenges Marma teachers in Khagrachari District encounter in implementing m<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">other-tongue education<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">. It explored how technology in general and language AI in particular could help overcome some of these issues and help improve educational outcomes for Marma children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers heard from Marma teachers at both pre-primary and primary level, working in multilingual and monolingual government schools in urban and rural locations. They also interviewed other stakeholders, including education officers, civil society experts and Marma textbook authors from the National Curriculum and Textbook Board.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We concluded that a multifaceted approach <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">combining accessible EdTech solutions, literacy and digital skills training, curriculum adjustments, and community involvement could help improve educational outcomes<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Marma children through effective m<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">other-tongue education<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #143878;\">We identified multiple barriers to Marma-language education<\/span><\/h3><ul><li><b>Low literacy in Marma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Marma is primarily an oral language, and many speakers don\u2019t read or write it. Even teachers are largely unfamiliar with the standardized written form, making it hard for them to teach reading and writing skills and to make use of the resources available.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><b>Preference for Bangla<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: both parents and teachers prioritize learning Bangla as a route to economic opportunity over formal study of Marma.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Technology barriers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a shortage of resources, poor connectivity and infrastructure problems limit access to digital tools, especially in rural areas. Many teachers need training to use the available EdTech solutions effectively.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Issues in the education system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Marma education materials are not part of the curriculum and school schedules for the primary grades don\u2019t make time for Marma language teaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"color: #143878;\">EdTech can be part of a holistic solution<\/span><\/h3><p><b>Integrate tailored language-enabled EdTech solutions\u00a0<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language technology is a powerful tool that can help both teachers and students learn and improve proficiency in Marma. Features like offline access, text-to-speech, and audiovisual content can enhance engagement and learning.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaboration with local EdTech developers could yield design culturally appropriate tools geared to the needs of Marma students and teachers.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Enhance teacher training and support<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide comprehensive training for teachers in Marma literacy and ICT skills, focusing on effectively using digital tools for mother-tongue education.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incorporate language technology into existing digital platforms to support teachers to access specialized Marma training.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer targeted training of trainers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programs for teachers with strong Marma literacy to support skills transfer within the community.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Provide policy support and space in the curriculum\u00a0<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrate dedicated Marma language classes into the school curriculum with a scheduled time allocation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase support from educational authorities and policymakers to ensure that mother-tongue education policies are implemented effectively at the school level.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Build community awareness and involvement<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage local community leaders and parents in awareness programs to emphasize the importance of mother-tongue education and encourage support for Marma language education.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders to develop sustainable initiatives that can continuously support mother-tongue education in the Marma community.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner in the EdTech sector and with local organizations to promote initiatives and ensure ownership and sustainability.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c6bcc9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3c6bcc9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d010ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d010ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study was funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Australia and conducted by CLEAR Global, a nonprofit organization working to help people get information and be heard, whatever language they speak.
