data to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information possible. Our primary source for language classification is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/glottolog.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glottlog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and for locations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cod.unocha.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN OCHA\u2019s Common Operational Datasets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As we build our data, our referencing system will also build to include data outside of those systems, however, it will always be aligned to those sources in the first instance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Data scoring &amp; review:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once aligned with these core references source data is assessed against a weighted set of criteria to determine its reliability. The criteria are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Timeliness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The age of the data based on when data collection occurred (or if not available, then when data was published). More recent datasets score higher, older ones lower.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Representivity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How statistically representative the dataset is based on the sampling methodology, confidence level and margin of error. Census datasets are generally scored highest, and non-representative\/indicative datasets lowest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Language variable quality:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How good was the survey question about language used? There are a number of ways surveys ask people about the language they speak, from \u2018Mother tongue\u2019 to \u2018What is the main language you use at home\u2019.\u00a0 This can affect the accuracy of the data on language. Variables most closely aligned to our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clearglobal.org\/language-questions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rated highest, and variables that are poorly worded or proxies for language use are rated lowest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spatial granularity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At what level of geography the data is gathered. Language is generally geographically distributed therefore datasets with a greater level of geographic detail are both more useful and more accurate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dataset size:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How many observations are in the dataset. We preference larger datasets for better accuracy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All datasets are scored against these criteria and given an aggregate \u2018reliability score\u2019. This score is used to determine which is the most accurate and useful dataset where we have multiple datasets for a given location.
